Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care and Children and Young People’s Services (England) (Level 5)

The Focus Awards Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care and Children and Young People’s Services (England) (RQF) is designed for those learners wishing to extend their occupational competence as professionals within the health and social care and children and young people’s sectors. It is aimed at individuals who are working as care managers or advanced practitioners within these sectors. In addition to being a stand-alone qualification, this 90-credit qualification forms the combined knowledge and competency element of the Higher Apprenticeship in Care Leadership and Management – Level 5 (England) for adult social care.

The Focus Awards Level 3 Certificate in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care (RQF) is a knowledge base qualification ideal for learners who are interested in working in Adult Social Care or are new to the adult social care sector. It is ideal for those looking towards a career change and want to know more about Adult Care. The qualification aims to introduce some basic concepts of caring and preparation for employment in the adult care sector and is a stepping stone to achieve higher levels of academic qualification.

All teaching, learning and assessment for the qualification will take place in the workplace. Not necessary to attend college.
The assessment methods could be tailored to suit your needs, such as:

Learners may progress from this pathway onto further qualifications specific to their work context. A wide range of qualifications are available for use within the social care sector. These may include the Higher Apprenticeship in Care Leadership and Management, specialist level 4 or 5 diplomas or management qualifications, QCF qualifications or other work-related education and training to support continuing professional development.

Apprentices can also move to other parts of the sector, for example an apprentice specialising in learning disabilities can take a dementia qualification if their job role changes or if they wish to follow career ambitions in another part of the sector.

Advanced level Apprentices can progress to QCF diplomas at level 4 and above (e.g. Higher National Diploma in H&SC or Higher Education), including, where appropriate, opportunities for progression to foundation degrees (e.g. Foundation Degree in H&SC) and higher education certificates.

  • This course covers a range of skills and knowledge that are needed to work and develop knowledge in a wide range of work-based settings. It is flexible to suit all fields across the health and social care sector.

    Learners will gain sector recognised qualifications and develop specialist skills whilst working alongside experienced peers in the workplace. The Higher Apprenticeship in Care Leadership and Management (England) is a mix of skills development and knowledge and combines work-based learning with the potential for further work related study at university.

  • General Pathway: Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care and Children and Young People's Services – a combined competence and knowledge qualification.

    Specialist Pathway: The Level 5 University Diploma incorporates the Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care and Children and Young People's Services as well as further university modules on areas related to the learner's job role.

A credit-based system: The RQF (Regulated Qualifications Framework) is the way of recognising skills and qualifications. It does this by awarding credit for units (small steps of learning) and enables learners to gain or add onto new or existing qualifications or can offer a work-based solution to specialised learning.

This competency–based qualification is designed to be assessed in the candidate’s work-place as they undertake their normal work role. The evidence must at all times reflect the policies and procedures of the workplace as informed by current legislation, the relevant codes of conduct and service standards for the sector.

  • An appropriate role in the health and social care sector.

Study hours are flexible and the course can be completed within 24 months since the start date.

Attendance at College is not required as the qualification is delivered within your workplace. The current awarding body guidance is 5 hours independent study per week.

In most cases there are no additional costs for this course.

The Higher Apprenticeship offers career progression routes into more senior roles and further academic study at university.

For those who would like to advance further in their career, they may want to take a further qualification or unit credits that can help them work in a specialised area.

  • This competency-based qualification is designed to be assessed at the candidates’ workplace once they undertake their job role. The evidence must reflect the policies and procedures of your organisation as informed by the current UK legislation, the relevant codes of conduct and service standards for the sector.

Majority of the assessments will be work based, using real experiences, written assessments and observations by a qualified assessor.

The modes of assessment include:

  • Direct observation.
  • Oral questioning.
  • Case studies.
  • Assignments and projects.

  • The learners can start the apprenticeship at any time of the year and complete within 15 months of starting.

  • Attendance at College not mandatory. Training delivered at workplace.

  • The learners will progress to the Advanced Level 3 programme or a Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care (Adults) for England (RQF) or specialist qualifications reflecting the context in which they work.
